  71. available on the CompuServe Ham Forum, and some other outlets.
  72. You can also contact Wayne directly (he is good in the book, Round
  73. Rock TX). I've run his demo on a notebook 386 quite nicely. Wayne
  74. used his program in his section winning CW scores.

  76. I have no financial interest; Wayne was VP of the Williamson County
  77. (TX) ARC while I was Pres. (before moving to Atlanta). A friend,
  78. a good programmer, and a genuinely nice amateur.

  441. Steven has hit it on the head. As hams, we have for years said "can't
  442. afford a commercial rig? Home-brew or build a simple kit." Then
  443. QST and all the other magazines which bang this drum (which quite
  444. handily fills up magazine pages with circuits that few ever 
  445. build) reap big advertising dollars from kit companies.

  447. We, as a hobby, actively encourage newcomers to try these things
  448. out.

  450. As a hobby which has a tradition of mentoring ("elmering"), we are
  451. doing the Right Thing(TM) when we identify something like a Ramsey
  452. kit which is apt to blow a new ham's radio budget out the window
  453. while discouraging him or her, and leaving him without a working
  454. rig. I'd much rather see a Novice/Tech find an old but serviceable
  455. IC-2 (and maybe put the Ramsey 'brick' on it) than have him or
  456. her get their hopes up on the FX- kits, only to be disappointed.

  458. I fell into this as a newcomer. I bought a Heath HR10-B and found
  459. out that construction was a LOT harder than thinking about it. And
  460. for the price, I *could* have found a used, solid, working receiver
  461. and saved much grief. I still would have done some construction,
  462. (QRP transmitter, Xtal calibrator, etc.) but would have initially
  463. tackled less imposing projects.

  465. Keep in mind, this was with a Heathkit, which was absolutely the
  466. best. I think all of us who knew Heath know that Ramsey is no
  467. Heath.

  485.         Russian Amateur Radio Emergency Services (RARES) was born
  486.    during the turbulent days of the Chernobyl tragedy.  But RARES
  487.    true abilities  emerged  in  December of 1988,  at the time of
  488.    Armenia's  devastating  earthquake.  No  communications   were
  489.    available with the disaster zone,  with a notable exception of
  490.    amateur radio. Our emergency network was fully operational two
  491.    hours after.  Rescue teams,  as well as the Disaster Relief HQ
  492.    in Moscow and Armenia,  had their communications  provided  by
  493.    RARES and  the amateurs of the former Soviet Union.  May 1991 -
  494.    another earthquake in Georgia - and again  RARES  assisted  the
  495.    search and rescue teams. There are many similar examples, where
  496.    RARES provided  invaluable  life-saving  links,  in  situations
  497.    totally lacking goverment communication support.
  498.         On August 19,  1991,  the faithful day,  when  democratic
  499.    movement in  Russia  was  hanging  by a thread,  RARES station
  500.    begun transmitting Boris Yeltsin's decrees to the  peoples  of
  501.    Russia.  And  the  following day,  R3A became operational from
  502.    Moscow's "White House",  providing communications support  for
  503.    three  days  to  the  President of Russia,  the members of the
  504.    Parliament and the "Radio Russia",  when the  putschists  took
  505.    control of media and telephone facilities.
  506.         We, the RARES members, are ready, willing and able. We are
  507.    ready to react immediately,  in Russia or anywhere else  (like
  508.    during Iranian earthquake of 1989),  where our help is needed.
  509.    We are a thousand-strong with members  all  over  Russia. Our
  510.    sole purpose is to provide disaster relief communications.  We
  511.    do the job,  but at present lack outside financial support and
  512.    modern equipment. High on the list of our needs are mobile and
  513.    portable  equipment,  generators,  means of transportation and
  514.    tents.  We  are  in  dire  need  of   digital   communications
  515.    equipment.  Any  and  all  assistance  would  be  welcome  and
  516.    attention to our needs would be greatly appreciated.

  557. I have a Logikey, an AEA MM3, and a MFJ (newer model with the "menu
  558. system"). I vote for the Logikey. Smoothest keying, most integrated
  559. operation. Most ability to embedd instructions in the memories (ie:
  560. programming the memory, in addition to saving code, that is). My only
  561. complaint is that it only has 4 memories. I would really want at least 8.
  562. However, I still think its the nicest overall.

  564. Will run off of a 9v battery (although I havn't tested how long.

  566. Mine had a problem - it generated RFI in the 17 meter band - in the CW
  567. subband (imagine that - a keyer generating CW RFI!!).  I called W9KNI, and
  568. he suggested more shielding. Added several wires, slightly bent the audio
  569. cable I was using to key the radio (to improve shield contact), and the
  570. problem went away. My guess is that they all cause slight RFI, but most
  571. outside of the CW subband, or outside of the ham bands entirely. If this
  572. was the case, I never would have known of the problem, and it never would
  573. have bothered my.

  651. Hi Conway, I have both 250Hz and 500Hz CW filters and I prefer the 500Hz.
  652. The center frequency 750Hz component in the background noise bothers me with
  653. the 250Hz and it does ring worse than the 500Hz filter.
  654. The big boys tell me that 250Hz filters are for "really serious CW". 
  655. I'm hardly ever serious.
